Educational Series: Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

contact55849

Welcome back to our educational series focusing on mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy! This week we continue our discussion on mitochondria and share how mHBOT improves mitochondrial dysfunction.

Quick Review

Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell due to their role as energy producers for the entire body. Mitochondria are present in nearly every type of cell in our bodies, reflecting their essential role in maintaining cellular and therefore bodily function. Any dysfunction in mitochondrial processes can lead to a wide range of metabolic and degenerative diseases, as well as aging. Thus, maintaining mitochondrial health is considered crucial for overall health and longevity.

Check out last week’s edition for a deeper dive into what mitochondria are, their importance to our body, and symptoms of dysfunction.

How does mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) improve mitochondrial dysfunction?

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) can potentially improve mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing the amount of oxygen available for cellular processes.

Here's how this can be beneficial for the mitochondria:

  • Enhanced Oxygen Availability

    • mHBOT increases the partial pressure of oxygen in the bloodstream, allowing more oxygen to be dissolved in the plasma. This leads to a greater supply of oxygen to the cells, including those with dysfunctional mitochondria.

  • Increased ATP Production

    • With more oxygen available, mitochondria can potentially increase their production of ATP, the energy currency of the cell. This is especially beneficial in cells that are energy-starved due to mitochondrial dysfunction.

  • Reduced Oxidative Stress

    • Mitochondrial dysfunction often leads to an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause oxidative stress and further damage cells. The increased oxygenation from mHBOT can help in reducing the oxidative stress by improving the balance between the production of ROS and the cell's ability to neutralize them.

  • Enhanced Tissue Regeneration

    • mHBOT can promote the regeneration and repair of tissues by providing an environment rich in oxygen, which is necessary for cellular repair processes, including those in mitochondria.

  • Anti-inflammatory Effects

    • mHBOT can reduce inflammation, which is often associated with mitochondrial diseases. Lowering inflammation can improve cellular health and function, including that of the mitochondria.

  • Neuroprotective Effects

    • In cases of neurological mitochondrial dysfunction, mHBOT may have neuroprotective effects by enhancing oxygen delivery to neural tissue and potentially stimulating the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis)

Next week will be our last edition spotlighting mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy and we will discuss how often a person should do a session as well as information on our different pricing structures.
